How to Create a QR Code That Scans Reliably
A QR code is a two-dimensional barcode that can store a URL, plain text, contact details, Wi-Fi credentials, or other data. Modern smartphones read them instantly with the built-in camera. To make a code that works well in the real world, follow a few proven rules.
1. Keep high contrast
Dark modules on a light background give the highest scan success rate. Aim for a contrast ratio of at least 4:1. Avoid light gray on white or dark colors on a dark background. The generator above lets you pick any colors — test the result on a real phone before printing.
2. Size matters
For close-range scanning (menus, business cards, product packaging) a printed size of about 2 × 2 cm (roughly 0.8 inch) is usually enough. For posters or signs viewed from farther away, scale the code up. A simple rule of thumb is the 10:1 distance-to-size ratio: if people will scan from 1 meter away, make the code at least 10 cm wide.
3. Leave a quiet zone
Every QR code needs a clear margin (the “quiet zone”) of at least four modules on all four sides. Crowding the code against other graphics or the edge of a page makes it harder for cameras to detect the boundaries.
4. Prefer short content
Shorter data produces simpler, more robust codes. If you are linking to a long web address, create a short URL first and encode that instead. This reduces the density of the pattern and improves scanning under imperfect lighting or with older phone cameras.
